Whatever Happened to Desiree Washington

In 1991, after accusing Mike Tyson of rape, Desiree Washington gained widespread media attention. Mike Tyson, the heavyweight boxing champion, was found guilty and given a six-year prison sentence in 1991 despite his denials.

Whatever Happened to Desiree Washington

At the age of 18, Desiree Washington won the 1991 Miss Black Rhode Island pageant. She entered Miss Black America that same year as well. Desiree, a student at the time, traveled all the way to Indianapolis to compete in the pageant. One of the guests at the beauty competition was boxer Mike Tyson. Desiree was able to finally meet Tyson there.

The next day, however, she went to the emergency room at Methodist Hospital and said that Tyson had raped her. Desiree said Tyson called her up to his hotel room and tried to force himself on her, according to multiple sources. During the trial, she claimed that Tyson laughed at her while she sobbed. The trial also included testimony from Tyson’s chauffeur.

This resulted in a six-year prison sentence for Tyson. However, he was released from prison after serving fewer than three years. Tyson revisited the case over 30 years later in his documentary. The boxing champion vehemently disputed the charges and claimed he had never attempted to rape a woman. Tyson added that he and Desiree are in agreement that he is not guilty.

Where is Desiree Washington Now?

The incident made her a public figure. She felt she had to write down her thoughts about the incident because of the impact on her mental health and the trauma it caused her and her loved ones. The former model turned her back on the spotlight after this and now lives a somewhat private life. Many people, especially Tyson’s fans and the media, took offense to the occurrence, and she became a scapegoat as a result.

This is what ultimately led to Washington’s 1992 conversation with Barbara Walter. She opened out about how the event altered her from an outgoing, positive person to someone who would rather stay in her room all day during the interview. When she said that she’d been given $1 million to take back the case, that was the part of the interview that got a lot of attention.
